Hello, my name is Roger Latimer and I am the proprietor of Seskinore Farm Meats. Although I wasn't reared on a farm, my father who was then employed by the Northern Ireland Dept. of Agriculture and cut beef animals for local farmers in his spare time.
When I was eleven my father bought a small eight hectare farm this fuelled my love of farming and I spent every spare minute either helping at home or milking cows for neighbouring farms. Aged eighteen I attended Enniskillen Agricultural College. After leaving college I travelled to America and worked mostly in the construction industry. I returned home and after working for dairy farmers in the locality I moved to England milking cows on a large estate.
I then returned home and ran a butcher's shop in Seskinore for five years. In 2000 I quit the shop and then worked for the Livestock Meat Commission for seven years and did a small amount of butchering as a sideline. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to make it his full time source of employment.
I am passionate about what I do. I am a strong advocate of supporting local producers. I want to know exactly where the livestock is coming from, who owned it, how it was treated and how it was fed and all this enables me to pass on detailed information to my customers.
I started by selling in Strabane Farmers' Market and now sells each Saturday in the month - Omagh first and third Saturday - Enniskillen every second and fourth Saturday. The farm shop ties in nicely with the Farmers' Markets. The shop is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (after I return from the Farmers Market).
I employ two staff and apart from preparing for the markets they spend a fair bit of time butchering for local farmers. Quite a few farmers like to sell a proportion of a slaughtered animal to other family members. I also supply local hotels.
